I plan to start hoarding supplies soon. There should be some big riots after the election. Here's a sequence of events and conditions that would lead to rioting. Do you see anything on the list that isn't likely?
  1. The economy stays bad for a another month
  2. Obama has a clear lead in the polls before election day
  3. McCain wins anyway. While the real reason for the polling discrepancy will be racism, there will be a widespread belief that the election was rigged. And there will be plenty of real and imagined evidence that it was.
  4. Riots will break out, partly out of genuine anger, partly to get that new flat screen TV.

We know the country can get past one suspicious Presidential election, because it did exactly that with Gore versus Bush. But two in a row would turn even normal citizens into conspiracy theorists. Given the anxiety over the economy, concerns about abortion rights, and the continuing wars, you have a perfect storm for revolution.

Interestingly, the only person who could stop the riots would be Obama himself.

This is for Tarter...My opinion. "Whites voting for McCain because he's white are racist, a bad thing. Blacks voting for Obama because he's black are showing racial pride and solidarity, a good thing." Isn't it the same thing? Voting for your own race?.How can anybody do that, who is talking about running our government, we are not all racist we have different point of views and to call others racist your racist against thyself. Forget about people being racist Obama wants a change I want a change I believe America wants a change..But it will never happen if everyone is stuck on the stuff that happened back in the 1800's. Racism is a thing of the past look forward to the future imagine if grow up and the only thing you have left is a person different than your race. They are the only one taking care of you feeding you and everything. Wouldn't that make you feel alittle imaginative on how you could of been? Then this ass well "I'm voting Democrat because I'm not concerned about restoring partial birth abortions so long as we keep all death row murderers alive" Are you completely mentally challenged? Unborn children is way too important than what a murderer does in prison..Are you saying somebody who rapes your child shouldn't be punished? I believe the world will riot, It's already begun because EVERYONE IS STUCK ON THINGS THAT HAPPENED 200 YEARS AGO. GET OVER IT, WORK TOGETHER WE MAY HAVE A CHANCE IN THE NEW BEGINING.

Tartan sauce,

You forgot how you want to be a democrat to welcome another 50 million illegal immigrants to America to do the jobs we don't want to do, so your children are forced to learn spanish as a second language, and we can replace the dollar with the Amero and join the wonderful North American Union.

Tartanmarine, you rock!

I am too stupid to think for myself, so I let the government do it for me. Great satire!

Whites voting for McCain because he's white are racist, a bad thing. Blacks voting for Obama because he's black are showing racial pride and solidarity, a good thing.

If McCain wins despite being down in the polls, maybe it is because people say they are for Obama for fear of being called a racist, as in the last reason on this list of reasons to vote Democrat this year:

I’m voting Democrat because like most Americans I trust Lawyers more than anyone else, I think only lawyers should run the government, and all the Democrat Leaders are lawyers: Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Joe Biden, John Edwards, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Leader Harry Reid, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and John Kerry, to name just a few. (Al Gore dropped out of Law School, so I don’t trust him as much, except on Global Warming.)

I’m voting Democrat because the Democrats support the trial lawyers and I think this country needs more lawsuits and less tort reform. And I don’t believe the trial lawyers’ contributions have a thing to do with it.

I’m voting Democrat because Congress has done such a wonderful job under Democrat leadership the last two years, that I want a lot more of the same.

I’m voting Democrat because I want to get my health care from the same competent, efficient, cost-effective, customer-service-focused folks who run the US Post Office, the Pentagon, FEMA and the state Registry of Motor Vehicles.

I'm voting Democrat because I'm way too irresponsible to own a gun, and I know that my local police are all I need to protect me from murderers and thieves.

I’m voting Democrat because Sen. Obama has promised to cut the taxes of 95% of the people, including the 30% who don’t pay taxes.

I’m voting Democrat because Sen. Obama has promised to take away the secret ballot in union elections, and I think the union bosses should know if a workingman or woman is with them, or against them.

I’m voting Democrat because Sen. Obama has over three years experience in the Federal Government, and “Hope” is a great strategy.

I’m voting Democrat because Sen. Obama voted “present” instead of “yes” or “no” over 120 times in the Illinois State Senate, and I think we need a decisive president.

I’m voting Democrat because I think that drilling for American oil is foolish, when we can buy oil from the Middle East.

I’m voting Democrat because I think windmills (except off Hyannis) are a better answer to reliable, clean energy than Nuclear Energy.

I’m voting Democrat because I don’t think we give enough to other countries in foreign aid.

I’m voting Democrat because I’m for putting up barriers to free trade, as they did in 1930 with the Smoot-Hawley bill. That made things much better then.

I’m voting Democrat because I miss the high unemployment, inflation and interest rates of the Jimmy Carter years.

I’m voting Democrat because parents shouldn’t get to choose the school their kids go to. Parents should leave their children’s education to the teachers and stay out of it.

I’m voting Democrat because I think this is the perfect time to raise the Capital Gains tax and drive investment money out of the stock market.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 4% on a gallon of gas are obscene, but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 15% isn't.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would, and I want to spread my wealth around to those who earn less—or nothing.

I'm voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.

I'm voting Democrat because, when we pull out of Iraq, I trust that the bad guys will stop what they're doing because they now think we're good people.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell us if it will rain on Friday CAN tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don't start driving a Prius.

I'm voting Democrat because I'm not concerned about restoring partial birth abortions so long as we keep all death row murderers alive.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that small businesses should not be allowed to make a profit. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution to people who didn’t start businesses.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe the law is what judges say it is, and not what legislators say—or the constitution.

I’m voting Democrat because there will be riots if McCain wins.

I’m voting Democrat because the media would call me a racist if I didn’t.

Farney, thanks for all the facts. Very interesting...

If Dems or anybody else thinks the electoral college sucks, they should work to change the Constitution and stop whining about the process.

From some stats I heard the other day, part of your scenario seems pretty likely. I don't know about the rioting part, but I what I heard was correct, McCain could easily beat Obama with polling numbers well below Obama's on the day before the election...and not even from the so-called Bradley effect.

Paraphrasing what I heard, in every one of the recent modern elections (I remember them quoting numbers back to Carter) the actual voting % swung 5 or more points from Dem to Rep compared to the polls. I.E. in the final results the Dems had 5% less and the Reps had 5% more than the polls predicted. Again, this is just an example, with actuals all over the place with the only common factor that the Dems ALWAYS went down and the Reps ALWAYS went up, regardless of who won the election.

I haven't yet looked for the data to back this up, but it seems that this should be in the news. Why does the pollng suck so bad? Even if all of these swings were within the margin of error on the polls, there is no way that they could always shift in the same direction unless there was a non-random cause. I can't imagine this is election fixing because it would have to be found out if it had been going on for 30 years.

OMG, you Democrats are always looking for conspiracies to explain the defeats of Gore and Kerry. The cold hard fact is, we need to protect our interests in the Middle East, Korea, South America and Europe. We must help our allies like France and Great Britain. Fortunately, Sarcozy and Gordon Brown understand the gravity of Islamic Jihad.

Christians all over the world are still being killed for no reason other than their faith. I'm not saying we have to spend 200-plus years fighting the Crusades all over again, but freedom to practice your religion is the whole reason America was founded.

In January '09, we need a guy who can hit the ground running. He is John McCain.

When you see footage of looting, there's always someone who has looted a toilet. I never know whether they just got there late when all the good stuff was gone or whether their first instinct was genuinely to throw a brick through the window of a bathroom shop.

After eight years and two such fake terms, this would actually be considered the third rigged elections in a row...

Somebody thinks big trouble is coming! US Military has redeployed part of the Third Infantry Division to the United States, and given it special training in riot control with both lethal and non-lethal technology.
The Posse Comitatus Act is dead by Bush and the Patriot Act.
Maybe there are plans to make it three hijacked elections. And it was two elections bush stole. Its a sure thing that there will be big backups in voters in places where they have voted wrong.

Drowford, I have to agree -- we are whiny and lazy. Phil Gramm said that and everybody hammered him, but I agree. There won't be a revolution or riots, but a lot of whining by Democrats again if they lose.

They still haven't gotten over Gore/Bush in 2000. WOW. Get over it. Lighten up, as McCain would say.

I am registered Republican but vote for the person, not party. I've followed McCain's career since before the '00 election when Bush did him dirty in S. Carolina.

Chris Buckley and others can whine all they want that McCain has changed, but at 72, nobody changes. Once your personality is set (and experts disagree when that is), it doesn't change fundamentally. Maybe McCain wouldn't return Chris' phone calls anymore, I don't know.

What I do know is Mac is a known quantity; he stands for less big government, a strong defense, keeping people in their homes and the old-fashioned idea of putting somebody else's needs before your own. His POW camp decision proves that.

If you really believe McCain will win, why not put some money on it on www.intrade.com? McCain is currently trading at 15.3, which means you can win 6x your money if you're right.

As a white South African over 40, I'm not exactly unbiased about black politicians. And I would vote for Obama with the same confidence that I voted for Mandela. He's an educated, modest, quietly confident person who appears to be less corrupt than most. (all politicians are corrupt and power-maniacs by definition but the shorter time you have been in politics, the less you have been corrupted and the fewer favours you owe!)

On the other hand, if he loses, South Africa will lose its place as the most hated, racist country in the world, which would be nice.

Firstly, as an outsider, I would just like to say that riots make for great TV, so this isn't necessarily so bad if you take a non-parochial perspective.
For anyone thinking of rioting, please remember some of the important ingredients if you want to ensure global TV coverage:
1. Fires are essential - it helps the helicopter camera crews zone in on the action
2. Destroy cars - the owners have left them out for a reason, they're insured after all
3. Avoid chanting - you will look like middle-aged peace protesters rather rioters
4. Remember to loot a shopping trolley so you can loot more than you can physically carry; better still you can loot two; leave the first by the entrance whilst you go and fill a second but be sure to leave a note explaining that it's already been looted by you - you don't want some scumbag coming along and stealing it
5. Be sure to loot first at the stores with the biggest discounts, <a ="http://www.philipgraves.net/">consumer rules</a> still apply!

Most importantly of all have fun (and cover your face up)!

Before I deactivate my account, I feel that you have the right to know why. First of all, to suggest that there will be violence after the election is irresponsible, especially if it is based on one candidate (John McCain) winning and another losing.

Another reason is that it ignores history. Whites usually riot more than African Americans do, and for more shallow reasons, but these are called "protests" , even "violent protests", but are seldom called "riots". This is a product of the media, whose quest for ratings is always key in their survival. While the Los Angeles Riots were wrong, the reason was that a man was beaten by four police officers and those officers were given a non-guilty verdict. It was not because an election did go the way that the rioters wanted. Do you see the difference?

I don't think you do, and I'm beginning to question your judgment.

If your email still isn't working feel free to give me a call at 703-901-6464 and I'll ask them to look into it. Hopefully the comments are moderated and this gets to you Scott, but doesn't get published. :)
