Sep 17, 2009 General Nonsense |
In the old days you married whoever was nearby and willing. Today you have a greater chance of marrying someone who shares common traits. I wonder how this selective breeding will shape humans of the future.

We're already seeing this to some degree. Athletes often have parents who are both athletes. And geniuses generally have two parents that were inclined in that direction. IQ and athleticism are two obvious categories, but I wonder what other, less heralded traits will get exaggerated in the generations to come.

For example, religious people will continue mating with religious people, and atheists will seek out other atheists. By default, that leaves the agnostics to mate with each other. Will this group create babies who have an unusually hard time making decisions? Or on the positive side, will that group be unusually open-minded?

People who enjoy wine tasting are finding each other, and often mating, in numbers that never would have happened a hundred years ago. I assume this group has a more refined sense of taste and smell than the average person. Will they create babies with super senses?

I started thinking about this after reading an article about one researcher's hypothesis about the increase in autism rates. I stress that I don't think his hypothesis will pan out, but his line of thinking is fascinating. He noted that children of engineers are somewhat more likely to be autistic, and then observed that because there are more women in high tech jobs, you have more kids spawned from techie couples. Again, I don't think this link to autism will hold up to testing, but the line of thinking is interesting.

What other traits do you think will become exaggerated in the future?

This whole thing is based on one assumption: that creation of life is that simple. If your parents have it, then you will too. Me and my sister have nothing in common, and yes, we have the same parents. If you were to stand us side by side, you would not even think us related.

Remember that life will happen as how God wants (or nature if you wish). We do forget many times that we are designed for survival on this planet, and as our parameters for survival change, so will we. And if we cannot change, we die. This is the basis of natural selection.

But if you think that because both parents are religious will have a genetically religious child, then you are dead wrong. As I may quote the movie "The Waking Life":

"I've read the postmodernists with some interest, even admiration. But when I read them, I always have this awful nagging feeling that something absolutely essential is getting left out. The more that you talk about a person as a social construction or as a confluence of forces or as fragmented or marginalized, what you do is you open up a whole new world of excuses. And when Sartre talks about responsibility, he's not talking about something abstract. He's not talking about the kind of self or soul that theologians would argue about. It's something very concrete. It's you and me talking. Making decisions. Doing things and taking the consequences. It might be true that there are six billion people in the world and counting. Nevertheless, what you do makes a difference. It makes a difference, first of all, in material terms. Makes a difference to other people and it sets an example. In short, I think the message here is that we should never simply write ourselves off and see ourselves as the victim of various forces. It's always our decision who we are."

By the same logic, idiots will continue mating with people who are equally idiotic, if not less.

Now come to think of a world where this fascinating trait, idiocy is exaggerated to the fullest possible extent. Collective enlightenment, eh? ;)

so I guess there is no need to worry, after all. Nerds mate with nerds, idiots with idiots maintaining an eventual ecological balance :D

Dunno. I married somebody who was nearby and willing.

If it were possible to measure, which it is not, I would venture to guess that 90% of the prison population was unwanted since before they were born. They have been resented just for existing. To enter the world with that as the starting point, is a recipe for disaster. The cost to society is huge because they are a burden on everyone from the time they are born to the rest of their lives. They breed and repeat the cycle and increase disproportionately. It's reverse natural selection.

If Mensas produce Mensas, and musical talent begets musical talent, then the flip side is also true.

My thinking is the very smartest PH.D.s will find each other, marry, breed and have extremely brainiac kids, and then put the kids in various forms of daycare while they spend 16 hours at the office/lab. And that threfore, pretty soon, there will therefore be a thin slice of the population who are very, very, very intelligent with great attachment issues. Vulcans.

If we think beyond physical matings, we might think of what helps make a 'successful' marriage. Just an observation here, but, many successful marriages seem to be based on common AND complimentary traits -- without excluding either. A 'starter' marries a 'finisher' type of complimentary. A gifted speaker marries an analytical thinker. Butch Cassidy and Sundance -- no, wait !!

We are already seeing, in the UK, a massive lowering of IQ due to what we call 'chavs' mating with other chavs and creating the second generation of people living on benefit, skipping school, breeding uncontrollably and increasing crime exponentially. And our TV programmes have started to reflect this with brainless soap operas and 'reality' TV shows.

It seems obvious to me that the trait that is already on the rise and likely to increase exponentially is...gullibility!
We see more and more evidence every day from all sides of the public, from people believing Onion articles as authentic news [some eastern countries] to people believing only what they prefer to believe as told to them by various pundits they tune in to. Does the name Glen Beck ring a bell? How about the "Birthers", the "Tea Party" goers, the "Death Panel" [aka "Grannie Killers"], "Socialism", etc. ... etc.

I know this seems a bit one-sided, but I'm sure there will be plenty of those who can confirm [and balance] my theory using opposing viewpoints.

I've got to say, I am a bit surprised by the gushing forth of arrogance in the comments here. I'm sure everyone wants to think they were born with a naturally superior intelligence but if we held our self-images up to IQ tests, I'd wager the results would be quite disparate. Humility, like good common sense, is a cultural derivative, and until that changes, scornful comments deriding the genetic inferiority of the greater population are not only unwarranted, but they tell us much more about the poster than our culture(s) or our species.

The obvious dangers of overpolulation will cause anyone with a bit of intelligence to limit the number of children that they have. Plus intelligent people have more trouble finding a compatible mate anyway.

The majority of the population however will continue to over-breed, and medical advancements will insure that more and more of them survive, despite any handicaps to their intellect which might otherwise have caused an early demise, before they were able to pass on their genes.

Therefore intelligence is a doomed gene trait. (See the movie Idiocracy for further details.)

The really interesting part is that eventualy, all this inbreeding will cause all these various groups to split into entirely different species, with each member only capable of reproducing with members of it's own specices, "multispecies hybrids will probably be common for a few generations."
From there, only two things can happen:
1: Our various species will learn to cooperate with each other, and we will build a perfect mutualistic society.
2: The various species will declare war upon each other, eventualy to the point that we destroy the planet Earth. This would probably lead to several of our various species ending up extinct, Similar to what happended to the Xindi on Star Trek Enterprise

Since all the smart people are mating with other smart people, all the stupid people will mate with other morons by default. the eventual subspecies of total morons will evolve into a subspecies of life forms that who's brains are only capable of autonomic functions. Eventualy that extrapolation of morons will evolve into a parasitic life form to avoid the need of actual thought "behold the future of wellfare."

If you think about it, the various groups of nerdy people will spin off too.
~WOW players would spin off into a group of people with no real social skills.
~ Programmers might actually become a group of subspecies that communicates entirely in various computer languages.
~Unix users will spin off into a subspecies of people who always wear plaid and suspenders.
~Web programmers would spin off into a species of people who can not conceive of people with legacy browsers, people who want a website to be simple, or people who are not impressed by scrolling words.
~Math geeks will spin off into an evil subspecies that have the other various subspecies of humans bowing down to them during tax season.
~Scientists will be persecuted by religious nuts to the point that they go into hiding "if you think this won't happen, look at Kansas."
~Hardware nerds will be driven extinct by hillbillies.
90% of nerds are in more than one of these groups, so it's possible that nerds will be the most productive members of society in the future, because of their larger variety of skills.

Promoting the survival of the weakest does not automatically ensure they will pass on their genes. If they are truly "weak" by whatever standard they may be incapable of passing on their genes. A friend of mine has a daughter with a mental disorder. She's about 12 in her mind, 22 in real life. She can hold down a simple job, help out at home, babysit overnight even -- but still thinks boys are cuter on posters than real life. There is little chance she will ever become a mother.

I fail to see how caring for the disabled will destroy society. For many people, it causes them to mature in a manner they were previously unable or unwilling to do. "Any society, any nation, is judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members..." Roger Mahony
