@lazymochabear...congratulations, you figured out what makes the cartoon funny! I shouldn't have to explain this, but...as a stereotypical geek, Dilbert actually finds it embarrassing to dress in a way that follows the basic conventions of fashion, just as he would probably be completely embarrassed to leave his house without a pocket protector and at least 2 or 3 pens in his shirt pocket.
