Woh! What is this thing?!
This is a social bar from the Dilbert team and our friends at Meebo. It is a cool little feature we've added to Dilbert to make sharing comic strips, Mashups and other content, a simple click of the mouse from any page.
Try it out – use the buttons to instantly send the next funny comic you read to your Facebook status or your Twitter feed. We’re adding even more ways to share soon, so check this space often!
Even considering the bias of 'people who like reading Dilbert' - which is a valid point - I still think there's something fishy about the ratings. There are bound to be strips that even Dilbert fans find less funny than normal.
Another aspect of it is that I have given on occasion a low rating to a strip I didn't find all that funny, and even when there's been few votes on that strip it didn't move from its 4 star rating. You can never be sure of exactly what the voting average has been, but with few existing votes, a significantly lower than average vote is likely to lower the average from 4 to say 3.5 stars. I've not ever seen that happen.
Another indicator of the lack of statistical soundness is the apparent lack of a normal distribution (bell curve) of the ratings that one would expect to see for the fairly large number of strips there are.
dilogic - of course it's not sound. There is a sample bias of 'people who like reading Dilbert,' assuming that those who don't like the comic stop reading pretty quickly.
I've seen a range of ratings from 3 1/2 to 5 stars.
The rating thing has been brought up before, and I agree that it does not seem statistically sound at all. I don't think I've ever seen any strip with less than 4 stars, ever.
Like the coloring of the strips, it's probably outsourced to the Elbonians.
That, or it is pro-rating votes based on the average quality of comments left by the user. :-P
