Keep in mind that there was one strip where two Wally-ish characters were eating lunch with Dilbert, but only one was referred to as 'Wally'. It is possible that there was consistency earlier, but there were still other characters who looked similar enough to mistake them.
As in neurology, sometimes growth isn't adding new stuff but getting rid of old stuff that can cause confusion or mistakes.
He may have been called Wally a few months back but he was also called by another name inbetween then. I think this may be the 1st time it's basically official and starts to stay consistent.
I remember another character being referred to as "Wally" a couple months back. The prototype has been in a number of strips already. But this is the first time I've noticed our present day Wally referred to by name.
