I love big and clunky gadgets...they stand the test of time much better than the more fragile, compact, yet more technologically advanced successors of today.

The current obsession with shrinking gadgets may well be a leftover habit from a time when gadgets were big and clunky and we desperately wanted a more convenient size.

I personally don't go for one single device. I decided a while ago that I wanted two separate devices. One, reasonably bulky device with lots of HDD space, full video playback and long battery life, great for browsing the web, watching movies or playing music. The other was more for very long battery life, rare usage, available for emergencies.

The first is my Archos. The second is my phone. No point mixing the two as they have very different purposes.

'Trendy' is usually defined at least in part by exclusivity. Bulky cellphones were popular because they were expensive and for the most part unnecessary. It implied that you were more important than other people and were paid well to compensate. Being easy to show off only made them more popular. Once anyone could have a cellular phone, there was no point in showing them off at all.
