"bicycle pants were not an engineering solution. They were developed by trial and error. "

Actually, to test designs by trial and error IS one possible engineering solution...

Yes yes, I understand humor. I'm not so sure what S.A was making fun of, but judging from the first two comments here and the comments from others "back then", I feel my clarification was in order.

It's called a joke. Jokes don't always fall into the realm of what is real and true. In fact, most joke tellers bend the truth to make people smile/laugh.

Man, am I glad I could get that off my chest. Isn't the internet great?

Hmmm. Somehow "smart quotes" don't translate well from my word processing program. That should have been, "in the saddle".

I remember seeing this strip when it first came out (in the days of Windows 3.x) and I wanted to say this then. Scott got this wrong. The drawing is pretty funny, but bicycle pants were not an engineering solution. They were developed by trial and error. After all these years, they are still the best solution for extended time “in the saddle”. A hard, well-shaped seat with well designed pants prevent skin abrasion, and that is the real problem. Thank you for letting me get that off my chest. Isn't the Internet great!!! Also, it's not the pants that make Dilbert look fat, but has anybody else noticed how much weight he has lost in the last 16 years?
