Yes yes, I understand humor. I'm not so sure what S.A was making fun of, but judging from the first two comments here and the comments from others "back then", I feel my clarification was in order.

To follow up on J o S's comment-- it's satire. Adams is mocking the notion that bicycle pants are a shining example of engineering genius So it's not quite right to say it doesn't matter whether the comic is true or false; the joke depends on us knowing the comic is "false".

It's called a joke. Jokes don't always fall into the realm of what is real and true. In fact, most joke tellers bend the truth to make people smile/laugh.

Man, am I glad I could get that off my chest. Isn't the internet great?

Hmmm. Somehow "smart quotes" don't translate well from my word processing program. That should have been, "in the saddle".
