@4evrplan: lolz! I'd forgotten about those.

Some little old lady with a stick and brittle bones would fall down the stairs and miraculously end up sat at the bottom of the stairs, hair intact, make-up perfect, clothes all neatly arranged, and otherwise just fine - who would talk into her necklace with a very slight tone of "things could be a little less bad, I suppose, I'm 92 you know, oh, and I've fallen and I can't get up."

Priceless!

Registered just to answer this question. It's from an 80's commercial for LifeCall, a device and service that enabled people to talk to emergency dispatchers if they couldn't get to a phone. Seems strange that it became a catch phrase, but I think people were making fun of the commercial, and it just kinda caught on and stuck.

I suspect it's been around for as long as people have fallen, followed by subsequent failure to get up. As long as they spoke English of course. :-P

How long has that phrase been around? I thought it was new.
