All monitor types use the same amount of energy, regardless... however, on a CRT, displaying more black will extend the lifetime of the components and prevent burn, which could translate to less energy spent on replacement gear...

depends on the monitor type. he's using a CRT, which will use the same amount of energy, it will just be blocked.
