@ haavard no he does in the back in February 3, 1994 in the "Out, Out!! You Demons of Stupidity" strip, might before then too, but it's certainly a call through the 4th Wall there; and he certainly makes comments that are close to breaking through it w/o directly addressing the audience multiple times before.
