These automated response systems were *really* annoying back in the time this comic came out. It was a relatively new thing, and also had no voice recognition. They've gotten better, but it's still galling when the system is set up so you can't ever get a person. All the worse when you know the company is big enough to afford it.

If you call UPS (and some other companies) and yell "I want to talk to a real person!" into the phone - it connects you with a real person!

This particular device is known as an Automated Attendant, but more accurately known as an Automated Annoyer because most run a never ending loop. Perhaps they are trying to invent perpetual (e)motion.
