These automated response systems were *really* annoying back in the time this comic came out. It was a relatively new thing, and also had no voice recognition. They've gotten better, but it's still galling when the system is set up so you can't ever get a person. All the worse when you know the company is big enough to afford it.

For Virgin Mobile, it's "live advisor". Also, for voice systems, if you mumble enough times, it'll say "I'm sorry, I didn't understand you" the first 2-3 times, but then connect you w/ an actual person.

If you call UPS (and some other companies) and yell "I want to talk to a real person!" into the phone - it connects you with a real person!
