I got a feeling that Scott had a different punch line in mind at first. Then when he drew the first panel he thought the group looked more like hungry birds then an angry mob, and thought about Dilbert giving them a worm and decided it was brilliantly comedic. I agree.

I love how he anticipated that they would all freeze with their mouths open and had the foresight to bring along a worm
