IH, you are saying exactly what i've been saying for years. I once did an English paper in which i was supposed to analyze a book of my choice, and I picked The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. My paper consisted of "Douglas Adams had the idea for this story while he was lying drunk in a field, wondering where he could find a place that didn't spin so much. It doesn't mean a d*** thing." needless to say, i not only failed the paper, but got in a lot of trouble. I stand by my opinion though, considering he said that in the forward to the book.

dh47 and Warhawk, you two remind me of those darn english teachers. Maybe J. D. Salinger didn't want to imply anything with the central park ducks; maybe he just liked writing about ducks? Sometimes reading into it is above and beyond the author's intention.
Could this possibly get more far fetched? Let me see: Alice "planned the event". But the word "plan" can also mean to make flat. At least in some Germanic languages. And isn't she going to "detonate" PHP, leveling (=planning) the whole event so to speak? And "event" is derived from "venire" meaning "to come" in latin, so what is the real underlying meaning of PHP "exploding"? Well, Wally says "he is coming..." etc. etc.
I honestly don't think there is a single pun intended by S.A. anywhere in this strip.
I may be reading too much into this, but I drew another pun from "cigar-shaped baloon", namely something that's also made of latex and is roughly the same shape and size of a cigar.
