@haavard: nicer, for a memorable quote, would have been: "... For ourselves beasts we are..." Sounds more oldish.

And I think you have to work on the brain part: pleasure is not controlled nor controllable.

Haavard,

Thank you for explaining why you are not a famous philosopher. It is clear now...

Ooh, that reminds me something Gandhi said: "The nice thing about internet is that you can make up your own quotes". :P

Not really. I made that up.

Anyway, that J.S. Mill said that doesn't make it true. I say: "Only a fool would believe that man's pleasure is anything more or different than that of a beast. For we are ourselves beasts, and the parts of the brain that controls pleasure is common with all beasts with similar brain structures, i.e. all mammals any many other vertebrates."

This reminds me of an approximate quote from John Stuart Mill (I say approximate quote because I don't have the text on hand, and don't remember the exact wording, but it was something to this effect.)

"Only a fool would trade the potential pleasures that can be experienced by a man for the potential pleasures of a beast, even if guaranteed the fullest expression of those simpler pleasures."

I think Ratbert's better off than the rest of us. He's a rat. He doesn't have to worry about anything except the size of his brain.
