Ja, the big attraction in Germany at least is carbonation. At least one can get larger bottles there (I think I was getting 1.5 litre-sizes) and then they go to recyclers, and you get a deposit back for that, too. But then you compare that to getting Aqua Fina or Evian here in the states, like in Minnesota, where we have no deposit on plastic bottles (nor any I'm aware of), those bottles are smaller and, in the best case, make it into a recycling can. Not sure what happens to those thrown into regular garbage bins.
I for one was quite apalled when little 20-oz. bottles of water came along and people actually paid at least $1.00 per bottle for it. Even if your faucet water is bad, it's far more practical to refill big jugs of water at the store for pennies. Yet wasteful Americans (and Europeans) put down big money for small amounts of water in plastic containers that are thrown out or, in a best-case scenario, recycled.
