Only had bad experience with Vista ("forced" by a new laptop for a few months), but the transition from xp 64-bit to Server 2008 was a good experience. No major changes when going to Server 2008 R2 either.
Vista's biggest problem was how much it took to run. Even with no applications running, an average computer would be at 30% of its capabilities just running Vista. If you weren't a gamer, Vista was pointless.
Vista is fine. It just doesn't have anything truly useful that XP doesn't have, unless you pay an arm and a leg to upgrade to business or ultimate edition, and even then it's of questionable value. Even today, people look for ways to get XP instead of Vista. Microsoft is even making money off it by structuring their license system so that in order to "downgrade" to XP, you first have to upgrade to Business or Ultimate, so you have to pay twice over to get XP on a system that already has some version of Vista. About the only advantage Vista really has is DirectX 10, and if you're not a serious gamer that isn't relevant.
