I made the experience that it mainly depends on the country. In Germany splitting the bill is the standard practice while in France it's rather unusual.
Depends on where you go; it's easier to split the bill at some restaurants than others. If you're going to do it, tell the wait staff before they take your orders.
Once I was at a restaurant with 14 people, and everyone got a separate bill for their order- we just didn't get change back if the change was only a few cents.
