livnthedream, due to the ignorance of that rule, the general population and many dictionaries accept data as singular. Datum is the AR singular, data is generally accepted as being able to refer to singular and plural.

Whilst I agree with you, I don't think we can be dogmatic about it anymore and it's a battle that should be considered lost, as much as I admire your pluck.

You are partially right. Data is plural. Datum is singular. So, as you stated, "data are useless" is correct.

"Data" is both singular and plural, so yes, "data are useless" is grammatically correct.

Are you talking about how Dilbert says, "data are useless" which I think is technically correct but am too lazy to google to make sure or that I spelled "off" with only one f which is not a grammer mistake and; in my defence, happened with a small child on my lap.
