I read about this in one of Scott's books. Apparently, he tried do the same comic with a gun and then later replaced with only the sounds of gunfire so as to remove the shooting element from the strip. Neither was acceptable to the editors. It seems that, in the eyes of the editors, you are more than welcome to shoot someone in your comic just so long as you don't do it with a gun.
