Robdouth don't confuse "media hype about a couple of specific cases in the us" with ""the entire field of". In the US .all. science that hits the media is bought (if not bought by the presidency/senate to show the people that the action they were going to take either way is the right one, then bought by a specific lobbyist organization), and that goes for both sides of all investigations. The rest of the world can not be judged by US standards of "whatever suits us the best at the moment" philosophy. There are plenty of weather stations around the globe, and the sum total of all temperatures is an increase of the average temperature, and if we extrapolate the theoretical temperature oscillation that is naturally occuring (ice-ages and such) there seem to be a clear discrepancy upwards.
Unfortunately media loves a good visual.. so when they want to do a report on global warming on TV they usually film events like the polar caps "calving" ice bergs.. The "proof" of global warming lies not in the calving, but in the reduced thickness of the ice.
