burning bridges means severing old connections, meaning that you do something that makes it certain that you don't have the possibility of coming back. generally before burning the bridges to an old company you'd get your work-certificates, find a new job and such. so ted only insults phb just a little, so that he can still stay in connection with him later.
I'm not a native English speaking person. I'm not sure to fully understand the "I don't want to burn any bridges" expression.
Could someone help me on this ?
So true as always .... but this time with a painful twist : my girlfriend go downsized last week due to financial crisis and the girlfriend of my best mate yesterday.
I am really wondering this is due to financial crisis or people are just using the reason as an excuse. I know a lot of business who are doing quite well and do not seemed to be impacted by the crisis. Too me, this situation is not too much different from what has been happening through the years : people are being scared by the local authorities in the hope they will follow as sheep and can be intimidated. In the last century it was the vicar and the local baron/mayor. Now, it is the economical crisis they are using.
