First I had troubles understanding the middle panel's analogy with the "blind person" - why should someone turn into a tree?

But today I stumbled on this older Dilbert strip, which sheds a little light on the matter:

Together with the comments pointing out to the economic crisis, I figured out that he became a tree to compensate for the bad pay which won't allow him to maintain his living standard. But as a tree, he only needs light and water. To put it together, like a blind person compensates her missing vision sense with better hearing, the tree guy compensates some missing payment with lowering his own demands.

It's funny because with all of this worrying about the environment combined with the world economic problem, you would get a better life as a tree than as a human

It took me a second to understand it, but I got it now. I wouldn't say that this one deserves a 31/2 stars it got. It isn't his funniest strip, but it's very original. I'd give it 4 stars.

i dont understand why some people are commenting about how unoriginal or unfunny dilbert is becoming. some are funnier than others of course. like 1 234 5 said, he has to write one of these for every day, EVERY DAY! and besides, this one is, in fact, funny. by the way, if you have a daily comic strip thats been in circulation as long as dilbert, please link me to it so i can critique the originality of your work.

This is the result of Scott thinking about solutions to the economic crisis, and the wishful thinking theory evolution, at the same time. I like it! But Charles Darwin will get the last laugh on you all, though. I suggest supporting your oversized brains with tap water. It's as close as you can get to becoming a tree for a while.
