@ina, ligerbert:
It is all so clear to me now - WE, the readers of Dilbert, ARE Dogbert!

Dogbert is a metaphor for the Dilbert reader, and like little children who jam sticks into an ant hive or tear the wings of a fly, Dogbert fills the lives of Dilbert colleagues with misery and pain, just to see how much they can take, and when they will break.

The stories about idiots make Dogbert and us feel almighty, powerful and wise, we laugh at the inability of the characters to control their pitiful existences.

Coming up next:
"Analysis of our hero, Wally", or "Wally - you can't pick a hair from a bald guys head".

:-)
