In New Zealand, whether he'd get a reference depends on why he was cleaning out his desk.

If he was being fired for violence, there'd probably be two security guards with him, and he wouldn't.

If he was fired for uselessness, he probably wouldn't get a reference, or if he did, he wouldn't want to show it to anybody.

If he was fired for company-coping-with-economic-crisis, he probably would.

Ted's never exactly come across as a Rhodes scholar, but asking for a letter of reference from a company that just fired him makes about as much sense as trying to introduce the Elbonians to rollerblading.

I think catbert would be more likely to give him a letter of recommendation to be used in experiments or to test new safety devices for machinery with a lot of fast moving sharp pointy objects.
