@tom314:

This sounds like a ton of instant messenger conversations I've had.

I sent my boss an e-mail with work that has been done, issues and questions about others, present a few possibilities and ask where to go from there..

He replies with 'ok' ...

Brilliant again!

Just had a similar exchange with my boss:
- We need you to do something different.
- OK, what?
- Different.
- Ummm... that does not help.
- Client did not like it.
- Did they say what they would like?
- Well, they want something better.
- That would mean that what I did so far was somehow bad, which I don't think it was.
- No I am not saying you did a bad job, they just want something "better".
- So can you show me or give me what they liked?
- OK, now you are getting on my nerves, just come up with something that they will like!!!
- So you want me to keep guessing, when the rest of the people on the team know what the client wants?
- No, I just want you to come up with something!!!!!
- So show me, or give me what it is.

Later:

- OK, they want more of what we showed them from another project.
- OK, show me what you showed them, and I'll try to incorporate that too.
- But can't you just come up with something?
- Not out of thin air.
- Why not?
- Because there are millions of possibilities, and they can not all be done in a reasonable amount of time.
- But you are the pro, surely you can come up with something that they will like?
- Why should I guess, when you can just give me what they want and I will work with that?
- But you are the professional! You should be able to come up with something?
- But WHAT????
- I don't know, something they will like!
- How can I know what they will like when I was not in the meetings, and not given anything as to what they are asking for??? You guys were there and you know what it was, so pass it on to me and let me do the job!
- But why can't you just come up with something?
- Because the deadline is looming and there is no time for guessing.
- I don't care, stay longer, come in on the weekend... (without being paid of course). So when can I expect it?
- What?
- That you finish this?
- Some time after you give me what it is that client wants.
- But you should be able to come up with something that the client will like!!!

and so on, ad nauseum.

I kid you not. This took TWO days, and finally they give me what the client wanted all along, and tell me that my job is on the line. There was absolutely no reason not to give me that, except to provoke an argument.
All the boss had to do was "Here is what the client wants, make it happen", and they would get it in a matter of hours.

What is Dilbert, complaining about? Unclear email are an absolute delight, you can interpret as you please ... it is usually the clear emails that get unpleasant ... Dilbert needs to talk to Wally, I am sure he has all this knowledge ...

Then again this hilarious.
