@Ensoh: Precisely. They were actually subject to anyone who wore the Golden Cap. We find in a later sequel (albeit contested) that the name of their leader was Chistery, hence my comment on Saturday.

@ BlueSky: The winged monkey thing is a reference, I think, to "The Wizard of Oz." They were lackeys of one of the witches, and attacked Dorothy's band.
