I'm sending this to my boss - we have an open plan office (quite common in the UK) and one of the complaints is the noise level.
Open plan is nice sometimes because you're reminded that you're not the only person at work, but there's a serious downside when you just want to get down to work and concentrate on something.
Ah the open plan office! What a great idea that sounded like! Everyone can communicate so much more easily, it'll allow the cross-pollenation of knowledge, the flow of ideas, the positive energy! It'll be so much more pleasant to work in without all those pesky barriers around.
At a place I worked, when management out sourced some of the manufacturing they put cubicles on half of the factory floor. The cubicle walls were only 4½ feet high and the ceiling about 30. But at least they removed the overhead gantry cranes.
