No this isn't a matter of idiots. Its the fact that if you are shown to have knowledge beyond what is required for your job your bosses will see that as a resource to be tapped resulting in extra work for the same pay and in most cases that I have seen with the expectation that no matter how much extra work it is you will meet the same production levels you did without it.
