No this isn't a matter of idiots. Its the fact that if you are shown to have knowledge beyond what is required for your job your bosses will see that as a resource to be tapped resulting in extra work for the same pay and in most cases that I have seen with the expectation that no matter how much extra work it is you will meet the same production levels you did without it.

The phb probably knew that the people in the lab were morons like him and therefore knew they must think like him as well.
