After the merger, all employees will simply be required to re-apply for their own jobs, in order to guarantee "maximum efficiency." Personnel who are not selected will be assigned to the "mobility pool." http://dilbert.com/strips/comic/1996-08-13/

You can run a company with obvious duplication of roles, so the merger will not *cause* the layoffs - they'll just be "phase 2".
