Given in the first 2 panels we can clearly see coffee in the mug I would say what you are seeing is the bottom rim of the cup, as cups rarely are completely flat on the bottom.

@AvelWorldIt is difficult to tell from where I am standing whether you have your coffee cup upside down. The Boss, however, does not.

Is it just me, or does the pointy-haired boss have his coffee cup upside-down in that last panel?
