OK, the way I always heard it was "10,000 hours to become an expert." So, not "practicing one thing" but getting experience in a field. Also, an easy way to calculate is, there are 2080 hours in a work year (at 40hrs/wk) less 80 hours vacation; 2000 hours a year or five years.

Actually, 10,000 hours works primarily for something your passionate about (as the case is with @princeofE). By the way, have you gone blind yet?

I know the 10.000 hours theory, and is more a way to selfcoaching imho. Also, is not to think of it as being good in a job, but to refine a talent.
