Coming from Dilbert the lousy (he's been wound down from OK) engineer that's a compliment to the hobby. Isn't the point of restoring cars to potentially sell to rich old guys who are pining for symbols of their youth? Sounds like Dogbert's kind of hobby.

A young boy is watching in fascination as his father restore his pet project, an MG.
The young boy says “Dad, when I grow up I want to restore old cars to”
The Dad looks up with busted knuckles and covered in grease and oil and says
“Son, you cant do both”

Standing by for rage response 5…4…3…2…1

Geez, it's like fishing with dynamite. As soon as I saw the strip I knew there's be a bunch of pissed off people having a grumble.

Just remember, Scott, when the computers come alive (as you've predicted) the safest car to be in is an old mechanical one with no computer.

Hey, can I jump in on attempting to psychoanalyze Scott based off of one strip?

I see it as two engineers (or whatever Wally is) who are sick of the small talk. Every time I meet people they want to mention their hobbies. Whether it's old cars, golf, skiing, scuba-diving, or sailing, they pick these trite, cookie-cutter interests in an attempt to blend in. Then we all have to stand there for the next 10 or 15 minutes before the conference starts listening to Jeff tell us about the difference between a jib sail and a spinnaker.

The point is: Why would anyone want to talk to those two about cars, unless they were looking to make themselves feel superior?

"My hobby is <Blank>."
"That's nice. Our hobby is making you question the validity of your free time to the point that you'll actually be embarrassed about wasting your life."

I agree that this has nothing to do with sarcasm/irony/lack of understanding - as written, IMHO, the strip falls flat. IMHO, one of Scott's worst in the last few years.

HOWEVER, I think that perhaps, given the right personality, this strip COULD work. But Wally, the lifelong slacker is so not the person to deliver the punchline. We need someone to deliver the line with enthusiasm who is intrigued/amazed by the thought of restoring old cars, so that they themselves don't notice the insult contained in the word "garbage" and they need to use a non-sarcastic voice. Perhaps Bob the Dinosaur?

Not sure if Scott is a car guy or not, but my guess is no..
