Personally, I object to the joke about jurors being people too stupid to avoid jury duty. While it can certainly be an inconvenience, it is also part of your job as a citizen. Like voting. You should be proud to serve on a jury.

I personally love how dysfunctional our legal system is, it means literally anything is possible. Fact no longer matter as all you have to do really is appeal to a juries fear about vague things.

At this point in the USA that's all that an individual can do to defend themselves against a large corporation or a government institution. You just have to be willing to cost the person who is bothering you more money than they'd make by coming after you.

Have you ever tried to turn yourself in at a jail for a speeding ticket? If you've got a week or two spare time try it some time. I did and I got the strangest look I've ever seen anyone give me ever. I was literally told " I don't think we can put you in jail for a fine... " by a cop.

I asked for it in writing, got it, called up the DMV and told them that the municipality where I had got the ticket wasn't interested in persuing it ( technically true, otherwise they'd have put me in jail ) and got the ticket removed from my record.

As far as civil matters go, I've never been sued but I think my point is that the knowledge that everyone has that only the stupidest people on earth, with no ability to reason in any way, and no experience whatsoever in the world at large, end up on juries. So they know that every trip to court is basically a coin flip.

Let's hear it for dysfunction and stupidity

I could possibly wind up on a civil jury, but I'll never be on a criminal jury. I ring ALL the bells during voir dire (when they question you to decide if they want you on the jury).

Are you or any of your family or close friends involved in law enforcement?
I work for a court. I have friends who are cops.
I'm a member of a sheriff's auxiliary organization (although we're just radio operators).

Even been the victim of a crime or had any family members who were victims of a crime?
Yes, I have been, and a family member was murdered

Have you or any members of your family been convicted of a crime?
Yes, my father

Have you ever had legal training?
Yes, a fair amount, actually

Are you a member of any political action groups?
Yes, several

If this was some kind of pinball game, I'd hear bing-bing-bing-bing-bing and rack up a BIG score. So far, I've always been dismissed!

I never get past the screening process, saved by my Baptist upbringing.

For the first time I needed a calculator to get the joke.
