A friend of mine was HIGH executive in a BIG enterprise.

She said literally to me: My work is 90% (internal) politics and 10% real work. I wish it was the inverse....

@axesmi - this is actually not true. The USA has never been an innovator in the sense that it likes to imagine. What the USA traditionally brought to the table was large scale commercialisation and commoditisation. For example, the USA invented practically no aspect of automotive technology. Ford didn't even invent the production line. He adapted the idea from european textile mills. However, by realising that an industrial process from the textile industry could be applied to the production of motor he changed them from an unreliable exotic toy for the gentry into the lynchpin of a global economic boom. Unfortunately for the USA, doing things better and cheaper is something that Asia does better and cheaper.
