CEO only wants to hear good news, preferably in the form of concise one-line summaries he can use to further his career. How you did it is not of the slightest importance. To make room for actual knowledge in his cranial area would risk losing some of the bulls**t that normally occupies that space.

Could have being worse.

The CEO for example could have shared his ideas.

I know this is disheartening, but the CEO is probably right. If the projects are going well, great. If the projects are foundering, even better. This will probably affect the stock price and he will simply collect his golden parachute on the way to his next job. Either way, he plans to take no actions, so the technical details are irrelevant.
