I agree, my best two bosses were females. I got the last one by resigning from a great State College to work for a public utility. I told my old boss, "Employees don't leave good institutions, they leave bad managers."
He reacted as expected (I nearly doubled my salary in 6 years because she appreciated my accomplishments.)
Actually, the PHB's big-boss is dead-on. Walk into an established organization with a marginal manager and see who are the direct-reports. They are frequently marginal characters themselves--hired either because the manager doesn't know how to hire top-notch people -- or is afraid of being over-shadowed by them.
