How can we engage our employees to work more (or to stop them moving to a competitor)?

1) Set up some mumbo jumbo to make them think they are either appreciated, so the praise makes them stay, or make them feel worthless, so they think no one else will hire them.

2) Pay them more money.

Usual management answer is to go for answer 1
Employees would rather they saved the money from answer 1 and put it all to answer 2

Yup, that number the sales department makes up on the fly when asked how things are going... it's all important and not at all a complete and utter lie.
