Actually, this is a common technique used by various types of "investigators" who implant false memories so they can accuse people of crimes against the "victim". Anyone remember the "day care hysteria" of the 1980's? If not, do a google and ask yourself interesting questions like "exactly how does one ram razor blades up a child's anus and never leave an injury?". Questions that hysteria apparently prevented the prosecutor from considering.
Apparently, having a phobia that you are a robot (all be it a well constructed one that mimics pain and blood loss) is common among geeks.
Well, you have a group of people who watch scifi a lot (where this kind of thing happens all the time) and have a mild form of autism which, while providing high IQs, they find it difficult to understand the subtle art of human interaction (adding fuel to the fire).
