I can't help but look beyond the IT department on the principle behind today's comic. So many companies push so many lateral promotions on their employees there may very well be only one person who knows how to do a certain function.

Violates my "bus theory": If an employee gets hit by bus full of nuns (or quits, or retires, whatever), is there someone else that can do his job tomorrow?

That has happened to me before. I was dealing with some moron from Motorola... sent them my phone for repair and he wanted to know if that number was a good one to contact me on... speechless.

Makes me think of the service we receive from Dell. Requests can sit for a week, and then you have to remind them the request is still open.
