The goal for any engineer in a software project is:
To show engineering skills, (even if it leads to overengineered code)
to show learnability, (even if the gazillion tools that've been added to the product only end up slowing it down)
to take initiative (even if you're not likely to finish the actual tasks given to you on schedule),
to show leadership (even when there's another architect or leader in the team, and you might be going around him at times as he probably thinks your idea is BS.)

And then, make a list of all this during review time.

Product...what product?

Neither the smart way nor the leadership way, but do whatever is the successful way.

Dilbert is fit for working alone. But unfit for lead a pack of drunken monkeys. PHB should not put him on any leadership position.

PHB is on the downward spiral today. Time to go golfing for the afternoon.

PHB must take it easy.

If every one showed real leadership, and their projects run smoothly and on budget, it would finally be shown that PHB is useless.

Push his buttons Dilbert; maybe we'll get to watch his head spin like Linda Blair's in The Exorcist.
