I can't speak to 'magical' thinking, but certainly there are managers who think 'wishful' thinking will cure many ills.

Do you think Dilbert's finally taken a lesson from Wally in not caring? PHB will ultimately do what he wants to do anyway so Dilbert saved frustration of not researching and handing in a blank page; and more frustration in that PHB would illogically go the opposite direction of where the research is pointing.

It's a win win, PHB gets to feel even more like he's leading and Dilbert didn't have any increased workload.

Did your bos realize that "bos" is Latin for "bull, cow or ox"? BTW, the word "boss" apparently comes from the Dutch word "baas": "a master".

If something goes wrong, PHB will end up blaming Dilbert for giving him incomplete data. He's just skipping the "brainstorming session" part.
